MEET THE FOUNDER
Hello, I’m Jon Newton,
founder of Newton Design .co
Working for many years as an in-house Graphic Designer for a multi-brand retailer, I gained a much wider knowledge of how a business operates and the pressures that they face. This has proven to be an asset in how I approach design. Understanding what goes into a successful business makes it much easier to design solutions that not only beautifully present a brand story, but engage with your audience and ultimately make you more money!
Now, as an independent designer with over 20 year’s experience, I help businesses around the world elevate their communications through graphic design, enabling them to be seen and heard.

While I work with companies worldwide, it’s nice to feel connected to the place I live. This is a nice view from the top of Cothelstone Hill looking over Bridgewater Bay and towards Wales. A lovely place to go for a walk when I need a break from designing things!
Background and education
I've lived in Somerset all my life, the county in the southwest of the UK that is famous for its cider and cheddar cheese. A location which has a lot of interesting history which I was reminded of on my daily commute to work for years as I passed by Athelney, where King Alfred hid from the vikings in the marches before defeating them in battle in 878. You’ll be familiar with this if you are a fan of The Last Kingdom TV series too!
I studied at University Centre Somerset, which has a good reputation for Art and Design education. From there I worked as a Graphic Designer at Shoon, a footwear retailer and wholesaler that was based in Wells. In the early days there was a team of designers who looked after all the design needs of the business and also their small design agency. At its peak, I was responsible for the design needs of nearly 30 stores and we had a good reputation for creative displays and working with footwear brands.
I started my own business in 2017, and have steadily expanded my network of clients in the UK and US, many of whom, I'm pleased to say, have become regular customers.
My favourite thing from Uni - a stop-motion animation based around the films of Alfred Hitchcock. It was a commentary on the control he exerted in his directorship of the films.
Design for good and giving back
We are big fans and supporters of music. Having worked with many musicians over the years on their branding and visual identities, we know that it’s tough to catch a break in the industry. So, as a helping hand, every time our income passes £10k we offer a musician a ‘pay what you like’ project, which could be a new logo design, cover-art for their latest album or designing some promotional materials.
By working with us, you are also helping up and coming musicians make their mark.

Deadly Custard | Music & Design
For several years I’ve been enjoying making electronic music in my spare time. I’ve released serval EPs and singles on record labels 5302 Recordings and a Max Cooper remix on Mesh. Some of my tracks have even been played on BBC Radio 1!
Under the Deadly Custard pseudonym I also create logos and coverart for my fellow musicians. Most notable clients include Dom Kane and Kindrid from Mau5trap Records, Ocula, and Tori Letzler.
